Tile Colors & Meanings

The colored tiles are Wordle's feedback system. After each guess, every letter receives a color that tells you something specific about that letter's role in the answer.

G

Green Tile (Correct Letter, Correct Position)

Also called: "Green," "Correct," "Locked Letter"

A green tile means the letter is in the answer AND in the correct position. This is the most definitive clue Wordle can give you — once a letter turns green, keep it in that position for all remaining guesses.

Example: If the answer is CRANE
C
R
A
N
E

C and A are green — they're in the answer at positions 1 and 3.

✓ Action: Keep green letters in the same position for all future guesses
Y

Yellow Tile (Correct Letter, Wrong Position)

Also called: "Yellow," "Misplaced," "Wrong Spot"

A yellow tile means the letter IS in the answer, but NOT in the position where you placed it. You must use that letter in a different position in your next guess.

Example: If the answer is CRANE and you guess SHARE
S
H
A
R
E

H, R, and E are yellow — they're in the answer but in different positions.

⚠ Action: Use yellow letters in your next guess, but in DIFFERENT positions
X

Gray Tile (Letter Not in Word)

Also called: "Gray," "Eliminated," "Wrong Letter"

A gray tile means the letter is NOT in the answer at all. Do not use that letter in any future guesses (unless you're using a specific advanced strategy that requires it).

Example: If the answer is CRANE and you guess MONTH
M
O
N
T
H

All gray — none of these letters are in CRANE. Eliminate them all.

✕ Action: Do not use gray letters in future guesses (with rare exceptions)

Game Structure Terms

Guess

A guess is each five-letter word you submit as an attempt to solve the puzzle. You get a maximum of 6 guesses per game. Each guess must be a valid five-letter word from the game's dictionary.

Solution / Answer

The solution (or answer) is the secret five-letter word you're trying to guess. Each game has exactly one solution, and your goal is to discover it within 6 guesses.

Puzzle

A puzzle refers to one complete game of Wordle — from the first guess through either solving the word (win) or running out of guesses (loss). "Today's puzzle" means the daily Wordle that everyone around the world is solving.

Daily Puzzle

The daily puzzle is the single Wordle that everyone worldwide receives each calendar day. Unlike unlimited versions, the official Wordle only allows one puzzle per day. The daily puzzle resets at midnight local time.

Word Length Modes (4-11 Letters)

Wordle Unlimited offers multiple word length variations beyond the standard 5-letter mode:

  • 4-letter mode: Easier, faster games — good for quick practice
  • 5-letter mode: Classic Wordle experience
  • 6-7 letter mode: Moderate difficulty increase
  • 8-11 letter mode: Significantly harder — fewer words to guess from, but much more challenging deduction

Strategy & Technique Terms

Starting Word / Opener

Your starting word (or opener) is the first word you guess in every game. Strategic players use the same opener consistently to build pattern recognition. The best starting words cover high-frequency letters like A, E, I, R, S, T, L, N.

Top starting words: CRANE, SLATE, STARE, TRACE, ARISE

Two-Opener System

The two-opener system is a strategy where you pre-select two complementary starting words that together cover 10 unique letters. For example: CRANE + STILO covers C-R-A-N-E-S-T-I-L-O. This maximizes letter coverage in your first two guesses.

Hard Mode

Hard Mode is an optional rule that forces you to use all revealed clues in subsequent guesses. If you get a green letter, you must keep it in that position. If you get a yellow letter, you must include it in every future guess.

⚠ Warning: Hard Mode can trap you in "letter cluster" situations (like _IGHT with 8+ possible answers). Practice in unlimited mode before using with your main streak.

Letter Frequency

Letter frequency refers to how often each letter appears in Wordle answers. The most common letters in English five-letter words are:

Top consonants: R, S, T, L, N, C, D

Top vowels: E, A, I, O, U

Elimination

Elimination is the process of ruling out letters (gray tiles) and narrowing down possible answers. Effective elimination is the core skill that separates strong players from weak ones — each guess should eliminate as many remaining possibilities as possible.

Performance & Stats Terms

Streak

Your streak is the number of consecutive games you've won. Streaks are tracked separately for "current streak" (active run) and "max streak" (longest run ever). Protecting a long streak is why many players avoid Hard Mode — one unlucky loss ends everything.

Win Rate

Win rate is the percentage of games you've won out of total games played. A win rate of 90%+ is considered excellent for casual players. Professional Wordle players often maintain 95%+ win rates over thousands of games.

Guess Distribution

Guess distribution shows how many games you've won in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 guesses. This stat reveals your playing style:

  • • High 2-3 guess wins = Aggressive, risk-taking style
  • • High 4-5 guess wins = Conservative, streak-protecting style
  • • High 6 guess wins = May need to improve early-game strategy

Average Score

Your average score is the mean number of guesses across all your games. Top players average 3.0-3.5 guesses per game. Casual players typically average 3.8-4.2. Lower is always better.
